Subcategories

Subcategories

Subcategories can be created to help organize content. They can also be used for applying filters and for Subcategory descriptions and other assets. (ex: the compare bases section on a mattress product page uses the subcategory image and description)

Creating a Subcategory

  1. In the Products menu → Select the Product Categories tab → uncollapse ▼ Malouf Home.
  2. Select the button on the Parent Category → choose Create sub-category.
  3. Enter Name and any other options (description, image, etc.)
  4. Save

Make sure to keep Visibility on or it will not be accessible!

Adding products

Products can be added to Categories and Subcategories on creation or edit. They can also belong to multiple categories/subcategories. If you are creating a new subcategory and would like add items from the main category to it, here’s a quick way to go about it:

  1. In the Category View page → Select button on the parent Category → View products.
  2. Select a product from the list.
  3. In the Categories section → ☑ check subcategory*
  4. Save and repeat

*Leave parent category checked or it will not be visible on the parents page!

While adding products to a hidden subcategory isn’t necessary, It can still be usefull for orginization and for making sure all products have the proper custom fields for filtering.

Hiding Subcategories

Showing all the available subcategories in the Navbar quickly overclutters it so, here’s how to hide all subcategories of a category:

  1. Access Pagebuilder (Channel Manager tab → Storefronts → Edit theme)
  2. Open the 🎨 Theme Styles tab on the left-hand side.
  3. Select Menu > from the list.
  4. Add the Category ID* to “Category ID’s to Hide Subcategories” textbox

*Category ID’s can be found in the URL on the category page. similar to Product ID’s

Filtering

Product subcategories will not be added to category filters by default. To do this, products in the subcategory will need to use a custom field. Most of these custom field names for Subcategories will be “type” but it can be changed to whatever is needed. To add the Subcategory custom field:

  1. In the Category View page → Select button on the Subcategory → View products.
  2. Select a Product.
  3. Go to the Custom Fields section → Set the “Name” to “type”and “Value” to the Subcategory Name(or desired filter name)*.

Make sure “type” is enabled on the Product Filtering page

*All lowercase and double check spelling for both
